Healthy birthday alternatives for those wanting to celebrate their big day Posted On 12 August 2022

It can be a tricky time when you hit a big milestone while monitoring your weight

Dieting can be very difficult.

Cutting out naughty foods while trying to introduce a healthier and more nutritionally balanced diet can come with many speed bumps.

There is a whole host of different occasions which can cause you to slip up and eat “less than healthy” foods, such as a big birthday.

While it can only be a small piece of cake, many may even want to avoid even the littlest bit of a treat in order to meet their end goal.

Luckily, there is a whole range of alternative choices you can go for in order to celebrate your big birthday but without the calorific cake.

If you are looking to limit the quantity of cake consumed, consider serving cake pops, which are fun bite-sized pieces of cake on a stick.

Alternatively, you can swap out the cake altogether and serve a birthday pumpkin pie, a decorated fruit bowl or even a watermelon fruit cake.

However, for those still looking for their cake fix, there are ways to make a cake more healthy.

Here is a recipe for a mouthwatering lemon drizzle that is lighter than air and not too bad for you.

Ingredients -

75ml of rapeseed oil

175g self-raising flour

1.5 tsp baking powder

50g ground almonds

50g polenta

Two grated lemon zest

140g caster sugar

2 large eggs

225g natural yogurt

1) Heat your oven to 180c/160c fan/ gas 4. Lightly oil a round, deep cake tin and line the base with baking paper. Put the flour, baking powder, ground almonds and polenta into a bowl, before stirring in the lemon zest and sugar. Beat the eggs in a bowl, then stir in the yogurt. Tip the mixture along with the oil into a dip in the original bowl, then stir gently.

2) Pour the mix into a tin and level the top, before baking for 40mins or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Enjoy!
